The Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG) Valuation

Valuing a PAG painting requires more than identifying the artist and locating a recent auction result. The work must be considered through its period, subject, medium, scale, provenance, condition, attribution and comparable market evidence.

The Progressive Artists’ Group emerged in Bombay in 1947, marking a decisive development in modern Indian art. The practice's valuation framework therefore considers the individual artist, the period of execution and the position of the work within that artist's wider body of work.

PAG valuation may involve works associated with M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, V.S. Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta, Krishen Khanna and Ram Kumar. Each artist carries a different market history, catalogue context and comparable evidence profile.

SPECIALIST VALUATION FRAMEWORK

How a PAG Painting Is Examined for Valuation

A painting is assessed as an individual market asset rather than simply through the reputation of its artist.

01 ARTIST & PERIOD

Artist-Specific Market Position

The valuation begins with establishing the claimed artist, approximate date or period, medium and subject. A Husain from one period cannot automatically be compared with a work from another phase of his career. The same principle applies to Raza, Souza, Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta, Krishen Khanna and Ram Kumar.

02 WORK-SPECIFIC ANALYSIS

Subject, Scale, Medium & Condition

Subject matter, dimensions, medium, visual importance and condition can materially influence the value of a PAG work. A large-scale oil with a significant subject and strong provenance may occupy a very different market position from a smaller or less documented work by the same artist.

03 PROVENANCE & ATTRIBUTION

Evidence Behind the Painting Certificate

Provenance, ownership history, inscriptions, labels, exhibition references and available documentation are examined alongside the physical work. Where appropriate, condition and technical observations may support the assessment. The objective is a defensible painting valuation certificate supported by documented evidence.

04 MARKET EVIDENCE

Comparable Auction Evidence

Relevant auction and market records may include Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Pundole’s, Saffronart and AstaGuru. Comparables are selected for relevance rather than simply using the highest recorded price. Artist, period, subject, medium, dimensions, provenance and market timing are considered when applying the evidence.

VALUATION PRINCIPLE Reputation creates context. The individual painting creates the valuation.
