Forgery risk in Indian miniature paintings is not confined to
obviously modern copies. The market includes works that may contain
a genuine historical painting with later additions,
workshop productions presented as court works, or compositions
created using convincing period-style visual elements.
This makes authentication particularly important where the
difference between a genuine imperial, regional or workshop
attribution can produce a substantial difference in
fair market value.
